Commission issues report on research and innovation perspective for advanced biofuels

European Commission Directorate General for Research and Innovation has issued a new report on research and innovation (R&I) potentials of the mid- and long-term potential for advanced biofuels. The report examines the R&I potentials for feedstock production, advanced biofuels production, and the use of advanced biofuels.

The study had three main aims:

• Assessing the potential of research and innovation for secure, lower-cost and low Indirect Land Use Change (ILUC) biomass feedstock for energy in the 2030 and 2050 horizon.
• Looking into the potential contribution of advanced biofuels for achieving the European targets for renewable energy, indirect land use and climate change up to 2030 and 2050.
• Comparing different fuel options for transport, based on long term scenarios up to 2050.

The report examines future scenarios where EU targets are met, calculating that improving feedstock supply and reducing conversion costs through R&I could result in an increase of feedstock availability by 40-50%, and that advanced biofuels could account for 50% of the overall energy mix of the transport sector, with a market volume of 1.6% of EU GDP, creating 108,000 jobs.
